The mission of Social Action is to achieve the Jewish values of Gemilut Hasidim (acts of kindness), Tzedakah (charity), and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). The Committee is responsible for the organization and success of awareness-raising, educational, and volunteer programs and opportunities. Such programs and opportunities address issues including, but not limited to, poverty, food insecurity, social justice, and the environment.
The Committee’s current focus is our monthly Food Pantry, which is available to anyone who is experiencing food insecurity. We offer food, household, and personal items, usually on the third Sunday of each month, from 1 – 3 PM. We partner with Jewish Family Services, which supplies us with some food, but most of our donations come from members and friends of the synagogue. We also co-operate with Hillsborough County Public Schools, giving middle and high-school students the opportunity to volunteer and thereby earn points which can help them receive a free college education.
We are serving 30 – 45 families, the number varying from month to month. For further information, contact Meral Ginsberg at 813-690-5713.
